    Notes:

    Scott Dyer Schmalhorst 1923-2006. Loving husband, father and grandfather passed away Sunday, May 7th, 2006. He was born in Breckenridge, Texas, December 23rd 1923 and grew up in the oil fields of West Texas and the panhandle. During World War II he served his country with the 5th Air Force in the mountains of New Guinea. After the war he attended Trinity University. While attending college he met Carmen Leyton and they married June 1st, 1948. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts from Trinity University, he attended the University of Texas at Austin where he received a Masters in Business Administration. Over the years he went on to work for the San Antonio Housing Authority, managed furniture and paper product factories in Mexico, was an economist for H.B. Zachary and the federal government, taught economics at Trinity University and finally at San Antonio College. He was active on many committees, was a member of the American Economics Association, Texas Junior College Teachers Association, and was named Professor Emeritus of Economics by the Board of Trustees, Alamo Community College District in August 1994. He was also prominent in local civil rightsefforts in the 1960s. Thoughtful and wise, gentle and giving, he lived the Christian ethic of 'turn the other cheek.' His influence touched his family and his community. He is survived by his wife Carmen Schmalhorst, his brother William Schmalhorst, his children Paul Schmalhorst of San Antonio, Angela Pofahl and her husband Thomas of Pipe Creek, Erich Schmalhorst and his wife Mary Alice of Houston, and his grandchildren Scott Pofahl of Pipe Creek and Brooke and Erich Jr. Schmalhorst of Orlando. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the First Unitarian Church, 7150 IH 10 West, San Antonio, Texas 78213-3465 or St. Francis Episcopal Church's Habitat for Humanities Fund, 4242 Bluemel Road, San Antonio, Texas 78240. Memorial Service will be held Saturday, May 13th at the First Unitarian Church, 7150 IH 10 West, San Antonio, Texas at 11:00 am.

    Carmen Leyton Schmalhorst passed away peacefully on February 7th, 2012. She was born on December 18th, 1923 in San Antonio, TX. to Frank and Henrietta Leyton. Carmen, a 10th generation San Antonian whose ancestors were part of the AlarĂ³n Expedition that founded San Antonio in 1718, was a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas as a descendant of Jose Antonio Navarro and Francisco Ruiz.
    She was educated in schools in San Antonio and Mexico City, Mexico. Carmen was honored to appear at the International Black and White Ball two years in a row. During the years of WWII, Carmen served her country working in Naval Intelligence. After the war, she met and later married her husband of 57 years, Scott Schmalhorst. They lived in Austin, San Antonio and Mexico City before
    finally settling back in San Antonio. Carmen spent many years as a Blue Bird volunteer at the Methodist Hospital. Carmen's years before retirement were spent working for the Alamo Community College District. Carmen was pre-deceased by her husband, Scott. She is survived by her children, Erich Schmalhorst (Mary Alice), Angela Pofahl (Tom) and Paul Schmalhorst. Sister, Angela Hornback, brother-in-law William Schmalhorst (Helen). Grandchildren, Brooke Schmalhorst, Erich Schmalhorst II and Scott Pofahl and numerous nephews. Many thanks to the staff at Odyssy Hospice for their loving and compassionate care and to Gabriella (Gaby) Samaniego for her companionship over the last two years.
