    • William H. Schmalhorst passed away August 8, 2015 at Exempla Good Samaritan Medical Center. He was 87 years old. William was born on August 30, 1927 in Springfield, Missouri to Hoeting Dyer and Lillian (Ramsey) Schmalhorst. He grew up in Borger, Texas where his father worked for Gulf Oil. After graduating from high school he briefly attended the University of Tulsa before enrolling at the University of Michigan where he received degrees in Chemical Engineering and Metallurgy. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He later finished his education by obtaining his Masters in Business Administration from the University of Colorado at Boulder. William was a veteran of the United States Navy. He married Helen Carson on June 21, 1950 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and together they moved to Boulder in 1954 where they lived for 47 years. They moved from Boulder to Longmont, Colorado in 2001. William began work at the foundry in Vandergrift, Pennsylvania before moving to Colorado and working at Rocky Flats for 35 years. He was a charter member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Boulder. He was an avid reader and loved science, especially astronomy, physics, and quantum mechanics. After retiring he continued to expand his science knowledge by auditing classes at CU Boulder. William is survived by his wife Helen; his sons Doug Schmalhorst, David Schmalhorst and Brian (Maria) Schmalhorst; and his grandchildren Laura (Matt) Roberts and Matthew Schmalhorst. William was a loving husband and father and a kind and gentle man respected by all who knew him. He will be greatly missed. A memorial service will be held at 1:30pm Tuesday, August 18th at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Boulder, Colorado. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Imagine!
