    • BOWER--Jean. 78, of Washington, D.C., on June 30th of complications of ALS. She was born in Queens on November 25th, 1935, to Claude and Myrtle Ramsay, and was a graduate of Vassar College and Georgetown University Law School. A lifetime love of poetry, pursued first at Vassar (she interviewed Ezra Pound for her thesis paper), blossomed in later life when she served on the Folger Poetry Board (as its chairman from 2002-2006) and wrote poetry herself, contributing to the anthology "In a Certain Place." Jean lived every day with a devotion to literature and the arts that enriched the lives of all who came in contact with her. In addition to avidly supporting various cultural institutions (NPR, the MET, the Kennedy Center), she regularly opened her Georgetown home for wonderful parties that continued to her last year of life. As an attorney, Jean relentlessly fought for the rights of abused and neglected children, serving as the director of the Counsel for Child Abuse and Neglect of the D.C. Superior Court, from 1978 until her retirement; in 1984 she received the Beatrice Rosenberg Award from the District of Columbia Bar Association for Excellence in Government. Jean was known for her kindness, wit, generosity and her devotion to her friends. Jean's first marriage, to Ward Swift Just, ended in divorce; a loving second marriage to Robert Turrell Bower ended with Bob's death in 1990. She is survived by her brother, William Ramsay; two children, Jennifer Ramsay Just and Julia Barnett Just, and a step-son, Stephen Bower; and four grandchildren. She will be deeply mourned by her family and many dear friends in Washington, D.C., and Quogue, Long Island. The funeral will be held on Saturday, July 12, at 11am at the Church of the Atonement in Quogue. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Family Matters of Greater Washington.
