Notes: Pike County Democrat-Times 20 May 1959---STUART PEEBLES, WM. WHITE KILLED IN HEAD-ON CRASH---Stuart A. Peebles of this city was instantly killed at 3:30 Thursday afternoon when the car he was driving had a head-on collision with a car driven by William White of Cyrene, Mo. The accident occurred three miles west of Winchester near the watermelon stand just east of the big cut made when the road was rebuilt a few years ago. Stuart had started work just the week before for the Laclede Steel plant at Alton, and since Thursday was his day off, he was on his way home. His wife and little three-year-old daughter lived in a trailer in this city, and they had planned to move it to Alton as soon as arrangements could be made. There were no witnesses to the accident, and no one knows exactly what occurred, but officers who investigated the wreck and went to the scene soon after, stated that the collision occurred in White's lane of traffic on the south side of the pavement. There were long skid marks where Stuart had applied his brakes, and showing where the car veered to the south side of the road. His death occurred instantly, and the body was taken to the Cunningham Funeral Home in Winchester, and was later brought to the Sutter Chapel in this city.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the Sutter Chapel, conducted by Rev. Parker of Joy, IL. Burial was in the West Cemetery.Stuart Arlan Peebles was born in this city, Feb. 8, 1930, the son of Wayne and Delia Claus Peebles, who survive. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Jean Newman of Griggsville, and three brothers, Bruce and Don who are attending college in Marshall, MO., and Terry Lee at home. Stuart was married to Carole Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Smith, who live on West Jefferson St., July 10, 1955. They have one little daughter, Debbie, a little less than three years old. Stuart served in the Navy after he graduated from Pittsfield High School, and before his marriage. He had worked with his father, Contractor Wayne Peebles before the latter started working in Quincy. In addition to his wife, daughter, parents, and brothers and sister, he is survived by three grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Chester Claus of this city, and Harry Peebles of Detroit. The entire family has the sincere sympathy of friends through the community.----------WILLIAM RONALD WHITE who was killed in the wreck was well known in Pittsfield, as he was the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Stewart who live across the road from the Donald Hunter family, about three miles southeast of Pittsfield. He was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil White of Cyrene, MO., and was home on 30-day leave from the Navy, having been stationed in Alaska. Mrs. White is a daughter of the Stewarts, and the family was all at the Stewart home on Mother's Day for a family dinner.William Ronald's leave was about up, and Thursday evening his parents were giving a farewell dinner for him. He was on his way to Winchester to pick up his girlfriend, and had planned to take her back to Cyrene for the dinner. His grandparents here had decided not to go to the dinner, because Mrs. Stewart was afraid of an accident on the highway after night. When William Ronald did not return home at the expected time, the family waited awhile for him, but finally went ahead and ate their supper that evening. They did not learn of his death until about 9 o'clock that night when neighbors heard it announced on a news broadcast on either the radio or TV and came and told them about it. At 3 o'clock the next morning they received an official announcement from the Navy, telling of their son's death. Since he was an only child his death was indeed a sad blow to the parents and other relatives.Read less Stuart — Carole Smith. [Group Sheet]
