    DENNY, Ira Grant

    Ira Grant Denny, 66, pioneer settler of Union County, NM died at his home near Mount Dora, Sunday, August 31, 1930. Funeral services were held in Mount Dora Church Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Rev W. C. Rose, an old time friend of Happy, Texas, officiating. Mr. Denny is survived by his wife Dora, one daughter, Mrs. Marie Livingston, and a grandson.

    Preceding him in death is his daughter Leona Pearl and two wives.

    The funeral was attended by hundreds of friends from over the northeastern part of New Mexico. Mr. Denny came to Union County in 1908 and for more than two decades had been one of the most prominent residents of the county. He had served two terms as County Commissioner.

    Rev. W. C. Rose, an old timer in Union County now lives in Happy, Texas, returned to preach the funeral of Grant Denny. He called at the News office and shook hands with his many friends. Mr. Rose still owns a ranch in the Mount Dora Community.

    Wanda May Vinson, 87, formerly of Topeka, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at Norton County Hospital. She was born on Nov. 25, 1916, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Clarence C. and Maybelle S. Ludington Vinson. She was a graduate of Shawnee Mission High School, received a pre-law degree from Baker University and her masters degree from The University of Kansas. Miss Vinson was a former social studies teacher at Wellsville, Wellington and Wichita-East High Schools and served as the principal at Antioch Grade School in Shawnee Mission. For 36 years, she served as an administrative assistant with the Kansas State High School Activities Association, where she founded and directed the Kansas Association for Youth (Kays / Kayettes), a state-wide student leadership, service organization. For the past 46 years, a scholarship in her honor has provided more than $55,000 in scholarships for KAY student leaders. Among her many honors are honorary doctorate degree from Baker University; Shawnee Mission-North High School honorary alumni; KSHSAA Governor's Award for Outstanding contributions to Secondary Education; Kansas Teacher's Hall of Fame; and Kansas State High School Activities Association Hall of Fame. Honor societies include Pi Kappa Delta; Pi Lambda Theta; and Cardinal Key National Honor Society. Offices held include national president of Baker University Alumni Association; Baker University board of trustees and executive board; state president of Kansas Women Administrators; and state vice president of Delta Kappa Gamma. Miss Vinson was a 50 year-member of First United Methodist Church in Topeka. She was an active member of the Almena Study Club and United Methodist Women. Surviving is a sister, Henrietta Vinson-Goodman, Napa, Calif. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Klasse Chapel of First United Methodist Church in Topeka. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery in Topeka. Miss Vinson will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Mid Tow n Chapel from noon to 7 p.m. today. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wanda May Vinson Scholarship Fund, in care of KSHSAA, 601 S.W. Commerce Place, Topeka, Kan., 66615.
