- Helen C. Schmalhorst, 91, formerly of Boulder and Longmont passed away September 13, 2018 at Good Samaritan Medical Center in Lafayette.
She was born November 1, 1926 in Ann Arbor, Michigan to Frank S. and Helen (Kent) Carson. Helen grew up in Ann Arbor but enjoyed many summer months at the family’s second residence in Sherbrooke, Nova Scotia during her youth. After graduating from high school, she attended college in Canada where she received her degree in Occupational Therapy.
On June 21, 1950 she married William H. Schmalhorst in Ann Arbor. After living briefly in Vandergrift, Pennsylvania, they moved to Boulder, CO in 1954. After residing there 47 years, they relocated to Longmont in 2001.
Helen was a loving wife, mother, and homemaker.
She was a charter member of Saint Andrew Presbyterian Church in Boulder, and while living in Boulder, was active in the choir, bell choir, Bible study, and other aspects of the Church’s ministry.
Helen enjoyed sewing, embroidery, and cross-stitch; belonging to several cross-stitch groups. She also enjoyed gardening, hiking, and camping and loved to travel and cook. Many of her fondest memories however were of spending time with her grandchildren and she never turned down an opportunity to babysit.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband William, and brother John Carson.
Helen is survived by three sons Douglas, David, and Brian Schmalhorst, Brian’s wife Maria, two grandchildren Laura Roberts (Matthew) and Matthew Schmalhorst, and one great granddaughter Emma Lani Roberts.
Memorial services will be held September 29th at 10:30 a.m. at Saint Andrew Presbyterian Church, 3700 Baseline Rd., Boulder. Cremation entrusted to Ahlberg Funeral Chapel and Crematory.
