John was on only one census with his wife, two children and mother-in-law in 1860. In 1863 he was drafted to the Civil War. Subsequent census records his wife describes herself as married, perhaps holding out hope that he would return. In the 1900 census his wife declares herself a widow. I have seen that he was discharged to a hospital in South Carolina. I am assuming he died there. I would like to know about his parents and whether or not he did succumb to wounds from war.
