Theresa A. Newell passed away at 7:50 am on Wednesday, May 28, 2014, at the IU Arnett Clarian Hospital in Lafayette, Indiana. She was born at home in Benton County on Thanksgiving Day – November 28, 1929 – the daughter of Peter P. Sondgerath and Emma Benner Sondgerath. She was the fifth of 10 siblings, having three brothers and six sisters.
Theresa graduated from Fowler High School in 1947 and began working for the Robert Swan Abstract Office in Fowler. Two years later at the 100-Mile House in Fowler, she met James Delos “De” Newell. They were married at Sacred Heart Church in Fowler on Theresa’s 21st birthday on November 28, 1950. They lived in Fowler until moving to an apartment in West Lafayette in late 1954. They then bought their first and only house at 1407 S. 22nd Street, Lafayette, IN on May 27, 1955 where she continued to reside until her death.
Theresa was a wonderful homemaker and active in many facets of her children and grand-children’s lives. She was a near 60-year member at St. Mary Cathedral in Lafayette and was involved in the Rosary Altar Society. Theresa loved to dance, bowl, golf, and play tennis as well as play cards and checkers. She and De loved to travel, visiting over 40 states. Some of her favorite destinations were Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida; Alaska, Hawaii and Nova Scotia, Canada.
Surviving are her husband of 63 years James De Newell of Lafayette, and their three children: son Jeffrey J. Newell (wife Sharon), daughter Jana Marie Anthrop (husband John) and daughter Julie Ann Newell – all of Lafayette. There are also five surviving grandsons: Kyle Andrew Newell of Johannesburg, South Africa, and Jade Joseph Anthrop (wife Amie), Dru Gerry Anthrop, Daniel John Anthrop and Jackson Jaymes Anthrop – all of Lafayette. Also surviving are five siblings, Clara Lamie, Lafayette; Donald Sondgerath (wife Cledith), Fowler; Eileen Windler, Fowler; Rita Schroeder, Fowler; and Dorothy Brouillette, Fowler, as well as over 80 nieces and nephews, including two god-daughters Kathy and Teresa.
Theresa was preceded in death by her eldest grandson Justin M. Newell (1996), her parents Pete (1961) and Emma (1953) Sondgerath and by four siblings, Paul Sondgerath (1945), John Sondgerath (1979), Loretta Sondgerath (1993) and Genevieve Pitstick (2001).
Visitation will be at St. Mary Cathedral, 1207 Columbia Street, Lafayette, IN, on Tuesday, June 3, 2014 from 4-8 pm. A rosary service will be immediately prior at 3:45 pm. The funeral Mass will be Wednesday, June 4, 2014, at 10 am at St. Mary Cathedral with Bishop Emeritus William Higi, Father Jeff Martin, Father Bob Klemme and Father Ambrose Ziegler officiating. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to one of the following charities: St. Mary Cathedral Haiti fund, 1212 South Street, Lafayette, IN 47901; Meals on Wheels, 685 N 36th Street, Lafayette, IN 47905; or Central Catholic Athletic Facilities Campaign, 2410 S. 9th Street, Lafayette, IN 47909.
Internment will follow at the Tippecanoe Memorial Garden.
