- Ray Eugene Rittenhouse, age 55, of Huntington, passed away Tuesday, December 15, 2015 at 3:22 pm at Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home, Fort Wayne.
Ray was born to Patricia L. (Vickery) Rittenhouse (Pearson), wife of David Pearson, and Charles E. Rittenhouse (deceased) on June 2, 1960. He was joined by three sisters, Melanie (Rittenhouse) Olinger, wife to James Olinger; Carol Rittenhouse; and Debra (Rittenhouse) Doctor, wife to Marshall Doctor. Ray graduated from Huntington North High School in 1978. In June of 1979, Ray began dating Brenda S. (Hammel) Rittenhouse, daughter of Dick and Arlene Hammel. Two months later, their love was tested when he had an accident with a state highway mower and lost both of his legs below the knees. Ray had the determination to overcome this tragedy and never let it define him. On July 18, 1981, Ray and Brenda were married. They had three wonderful children, Joshua C. Rittenhouse (28), married to Christi (Shannon) Rittenhouse; Christa A. (Rittenhouse) Spurgeon (26), married to Jayson A. Spurgeon, and Audra E. Rittenhouse (24). Christa and Jayson also made Ray “Pawpaw” when their son, Andrew D. Spurgeon was born in 2014. All reside in Huntington. He earned a degree in Electrical Engineering, with focus on Communications from Purdue University. Ray was a hard working man, employed by ITT Industries for 25 years as an electrical engineer. Later, Ray began a new chapter of his career as an engineer at BAE Systems. Ray was an amazing Christian example to all he knew. He was a member of Huntington Church of the Nazarene. Ray loved his family well and showed his support in all their activities, whether it be baseball, basketball, or performing in Varsity Singers. He also was an avid rider and rode many century rides with his family on their antique bicycles. His love for the fellow members of The Wheelmen was demonstrated when Ray retired countless bicycles at meets across the nation. Ray also was a former Indiana State Captain for the Wheelmen. He and his wife were former members of the Historical Automobile Association. Ray was a member of the Pioneer Festival Committee and he gladly chaired the antique car and bike show. He is loved and will be missed by all who knew him.
Visitation will be held Friday December 18 from 2-4 & 5-8 pm and Saturday December 19 from 9-10 am preceding the 10:00 am funeral service. All visitation and service will be held at First Church of the Nazarene, 1555 Flaxmill Rd, Huntington. Pastors Bobby Kemp and Gene Vickery will officiate. Burial will follow in Pilgrims Rest Cemetery, Huntington.
