- Sister Joan Elizabeth's sudden death was a shock to her sisters at Saint Mary's. She was recently sidelined by a fall and recovering well. Otherwise, she was always in motion and resilient. She had 31 years of experience in Catholic elementary and secondary education as a teacher, principal, and curriculum coordinator in Indiana, Illinois, and Michigan. In between she was a regional coordinator for the Sisters of the Holy Cross in the Midwest. In South Bend, Sister furthered the missions of St. Joseph Medical Center and St. Joseph's High School as a member of their boards. Her gifts of organization, concern for others, and generosity made her a good superior, administrator, or extra hand at Saint Mary's since 1990. Her religious community is consoled by the news that Sister died in the arms of an alert and caring nurse in the Sanctuary at Holy Cross' Rehabilitation and Wellness Center. The reception of the body and wake are in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto Wednesday September 28 at 10:30 a.m. Mass of the Resurrection follows at 1:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of the Holy Cross Ministry with the Poor Fund, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, IN 46556 or online at www.cscsisters.org where you can also read more aboutSister.
