    • Emma Jean Lutus

      July 15, 1920

      February 10, 2017

Emma Jean (Funk) Lutus went to her eternal rest on February 10, 2017 in Reno, Nevada.

Emma was born to Bishop Ezra and Bessie Funk on July 15, 1920 in Cain, Pennsylvania. She was married to her late husband, John Lutus, for seventy years. She is survived by her daughter Jeanne (Joshua Benin), grandsons Matthew Benin (Heather) and David Benin (Melissa Rosenstein) and four great grandchildren, Ella, Max, Sidney and Hazel. She is also survived by her sisters, Arlene Hammel, Josephine Lofland and Bessie June Risk and her sister-in-law Rose (Edmund Mitchell). She was preceded in death by her sisters Ruth Ensminger, Elizabeth Ensminger, Erma Funk and Violet Chiappetta; and brother, Benjamin Funk.

Emma attended Huntington College and Shippensburg State Teachers College in Pennsylvania where she received a State Teacher's Certificate. She taught for 3 years in a one room country school, all eight grades, near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. During her teaching years, she met John Lutus who was attending Gettysburg College for flight training for the Armed Forces. They were married in March, 1945 and their daughter, Jeanne, was born the following year. They moved to Boston, MA where John received his B.S. from Northeastern University and then to Rochester, N.Y. where John was an accountant for Eastman Kodak and Emma resumed her teaching career and received her Master of Education degree from the University of Rochester. She later became a supervisor and an assistant to the Director of Education in the Rochester City School District. John also received a Master of Science in Business Education and joined her as teacher and administrator with the Rochester schools. Emma served as President of the New York State Council for Children and Delta Kappa Gamma, a sorority for educators.

Both retired in 1980 and moved to Vero Beach, Florida, where they enjoyed living near the ocean and traveling in their motor home. She continued her love of church work and led Missions groups and Christian Endeavor and also taught in Vacation Bible School and Children's Sunday School.

In 2016, Emma and John moved to Sky Peaks Independent Living in Reno, NV and enjoyed visiting their family in South Lake Tahoe. Emma was very involved with the Sky Peaks Chapel vesper services, Bible study, and served on other committees at the residence.

Our thanks go to the capable staff at Renown Hospital in Reno and to her caring physician, Dr. Hardik Patel; to the Sky Peaks community for their ongoing support and to the Sky Peaks Chapel ministry.

A memorial service and reception will be held at Sky Peaks in the Activity Room, on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at 2pm. Donations in memory of Emma may be made to Sky Peaks Chapel ministry or to the charity of your choice.Published in Reno Gazette-Journal on Mar. 1, 2017
