      December 5, 2015

John Lutus passed away December 5, 2015 in Reno, Nevada.

John was born to Frank and Albina Lutus on June 24th, 1925, in Dorchester, Massachusetts. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Emma Jean (Funk) Lutus, daughter Jeanne (Joshua Benin), grandsons Matthew Benin (Heather) and David Benin (Melissa Rosenstein) and four great grandchildren, Ella, Max, Sidney and Hazel. He is also survived by his sister, Rose (Edmund Mitchell) and nieces Stephanie and Carol, and nephews Paul (Jeanne), Richard (Sue), Edmund and William (Kathy).

John graduated from high school in Boston and was awarded the Franklin Medal for scholarship. Two weeks after graduation, he was drafted into the military and served as a radio operator on a B-24 bomber for the Air Force in World War II.

He married Emma Funk, a teacher, on March 19, 1945, at the Air Force base in Charleston, South Carolina.

Following the war, he graduated with honors from Northeastern University in Boston, MA. He then worked as an accountant for the Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester, NY. Ten years later, he received a Masters Degree in Business Education from Syracuse University and became a teacher and then administrator in the Rochester city schools until retiring in 1980.

He and Emma moved to Vero Beach, Florida and resided near the ocean. They enjoyed their motor home and nature and spent much time visiting state and national parks and historic places in the United States. John enjoyed hiking, bicycling and photography and visiting family and friends while traveling.

After 21 years in Florida, John and Emma moved to Sky Peaks Independent Living in Reno to be near their daughter and husband in South Lake Tahoe. John enjoyed his years there being close to family and assisting fellow residents by doing small acts of kindness. He especially enjoyed working with his wife on the Sky Peaks Chapel vesper services.

Our thanks go to the Circle of Life Community Hospice and caring and competent nurse, Renate, who coordinated a team of seven to keep John comfortable; to the Sky Peaks community for support and care; and to the five Sky Peaks Chapel ministers who proved spiritual guidance and peace.

A memorial service and reception will be held in the Community Building at Sky Peaks on December 23, 2015, at 2pm.

Donations in memory of John may be made to the Circle of Life Community Hospice, 1575 Delucchi Lane, Suite 21, Reno, NV 89502 (www.colhospice.com) or the charity of your choice.
