A memorial service for Helen Margaret O'Donnell, 89, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 8, at the First United Methodist Church, 424 Forest Ave., Glen Ellyn. The Rev. Dr. Thomas J. Potenza will officiate. Inurnment will be in Chapel Hill Gardens West Cemetery, Oakbrook Terrace. Born Nov. 24, 1917, in Brazil, Ind. and raised in Watseka, Ill., she died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007, at home from complications of liver cancer. Helen was an executive secretary to several notable Chicagoland radio, television and sports personalities, an Illinois State Representative and a number of nationally respected attorneys and businessmen. Helen graduated from Chicago's Moser Business School (now Robert Morris College) and was honored in 2004 as an early and respected graduate. She was an award- winning member and officer of several Chicago-based professional trade associations and women's groups and active in the First United Methodist Church of Glen Ellyn for more than 50 years, serving as a member and officer of many of its social clubs and service organizations. In her earlier days, she and her late husband, Ed, enjoyed traveling to the American West, Europe and the Caribbean. Most recently, Helen became a bridge, crossword puzzle and collectables aficionado. Always outgoing, her friends often noted, "Helen never met a stranger she didn't know." Survivors include her loving daughters, Judeth (Harald) Karlsson and Merrie (Theodore) Eselgroth; and grandsons, Brian and Erik Karlsson. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, George Edward O'Donnell in 1994; and sister, Dorothy Marquis. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Mrs. O'Donnell's name may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 424 Forest Ave., Glen Ellyn, IL 60137 or VNA Hospice, 400 N. Highland Ave., Aurora, IL 60506.
