- Lieutenant John Stephen "Steve" Kohne, 57, of West Lafayette, died at 10:05 AM Tuesday, June 15, 2010 at his residence after a 2 year battle with pancreatic cancer.
Steve was born December 10, 1952 in Indianapolis, IN, to Elizabeth Neuer of Camden and the late Dr. Robert Kohne.
He graduated from the National Forensic Academy at the University of Tennessee and from Jefferson High School.
On October 11, 2008 he married Carrie Costello in South Lake Tahoe, CA and she survives.
Steve had worked in law enforcement, starting his career with Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis, then joining the Carroll County Sheriff?s Department for 12 years, finally joining the Tippecanoe County Sheriff?s Department in 1987, achieving the rank of Lieutenant. He also served as a Medical Legal Death Investigator with the Tippecanoe County Coroner?s Office.
Steve?s expertise in bloodstain pattern analysis was featured on both the Discovery Canada channel and National Geographic. He taught classes related to forensics and bloodstain pattern analysis at Purdue University and St. Joseph College. He also owned a business called Ellipse Consulting which dealt with bloodstain pattern analysis.
Steve was one of only 38 individuals internationally certified as an expert in Bloodstain Pattern Analysis. He was a member of the Indiana Coroner?s Association and the International Bloodstain Pattern Analysis. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, and scuba diving.
Surviving along with his spouse and mother, are 2 sons, Chase Kohne (wife Natalie) of Lehi, UT; Micha Kohne (wife Ali) of Aurora, CO; a daughter Ali Kohne-Price (husband Greg) of Denver, CO; 3 brothers Kris Kohne (wife Stella) of Flaggstaff, AZ; Pat Kohne (wife Cindy) of Greenfield, IN; Pete Kohne (wife Sheila) of Lafayette and his step mother Shay Kohne of Lafayette. Also surviving are 3 grandchildren - Elle, Gavin and Frankie Kohne.
Steve was preceded in death by a sister Kathy Kohne.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 pm Friday, June 18, 2010 at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel 400 Twyckenham Blvd. Lafayette, IN 47909. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, June 19, 2010 at St. Boniface Catholic Church with Fr. Tim Alkire Officiating.
