    • Joyce (Van Dyke) Denny passed away Friday, August 23, 2013 at Hays Medical Center at the age of 81. Joyce was born on July 22, 1932 in Denver, Colorado to David and Lillian (Peaslee) Van Dyke.

Joyce grew up in Speed, Kirwin, and Pillipsburg, Kansas and graduated from Phillipsburg High School. She began her nursing education at Fort Hays College and later graduated from Stormont Vail in Topeke, Kansas with the class of 1954 receiving her R.N. degree. While working for the V.A. Hospital in Topeka, she met and married James E. "Jim" Denny on October 8, 1955 in Topeka, and made their home in Caney, Kansas.

As they began their family, Jim's work would take them to several communities, beginning with Barlesville, Oklahoma where Joyce worked for the Jane Phillips Hospital and Denise Diane Denny was born on August 29, 1957. Later they moved to El Dorado, Kansas where she worked at the Susan B. Anthony Hospital, and David Raymond Denny was stillborn in 1961.

Next Joyce went to the William Newton Hospital in Winfield, Kansas , back to the Bartlesville, then to Plainville, Kansas where she worked for the Plainville Hospital, later the Rooks County Nursing Home as the Director of Nursing, and then back to the Plainville Hospital where she retired.

Joyce volunteered time as a Girl Scout Leader, choir member, and was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary as well as the United Methodist Women. She enjoyed reading, traveling, boating, singing, and of course was a very dedicated nurse.

Joyce is survived by her husband James Denny of the home, and her daughter Denise Monk and husband Kerry of Mulvane, Kansas.

She was preceded in death by her parents David and Lillian, and son David.
